- Students will identify neighboring countries of Ghana.
- Students will identify lakes, rivers, mountains, plains, low hills and caves of Ghana.
- Students will explore the islands of Ghana.
- Students will investigate the world’s largest artificial lake, Lake Volta.
Students will explore Ghana’s biomes.
- Students will define the terms plateau, uplands, lowlands
- Students will identify the biomes of Ghana.
- Students will identify the location of each biome and which land features are unique to the biome.
- Students will learn what is great about the Kwahu plateau and the Ashanti Uplands.
Lesson 2: Overview
Ghanaian National Symbols
- Students will identify the meaning of Ghana’s flag (colors and images).
- Students will learn about Ghana’s national symbols (coat of arms, motto, etc.).
- Students will learn the meaning of the word Ghana (warrior king).
Ghana’s Historical Review
- Students will explore Ghana’s pre-colonization history.
- Students will learn about Ghana’s road to independence from the British.
- Students will learn about Ghana’s connection to the Gold Coast of Africa.
- Students will focus on Ghana’s Akan state and Dagomba state.
- Students will learn about the Door of No Return at Cape Coast Castle in Elmina, Ghana.
- Students will learn about Ghana’s status as an independent country.
Ghana’s Indigenous and Important People
- Students will explore the Akan indigenous groups.
- Students will explore the Ashanti people.
- Students will focus on Kwame Nkrumah and other prominent Ghanaian leaders.

- Students will look at Ghana’s current events.
- Students will look at current environmental, social, and economical concerns of Ghana.

- Students will explore the art forms seen in Ghanaian architecture.
- Students will consider the importance of this art form.
Ghanaian Movement
- Students will learn about Ghanaian dances.
- Students will learn about the history and significance of drumming.
Ghanaian Musicians
- Students will review traditional Ghanaian musical instruments.
- Students will learn the significance of Ghanaian music.
- Students will explore the music of Ghanaian folk dances.
Ghana’s Social Traditions
- Students will learn about Ghana’s festivals and celebrations.
- Students will learn about the food Fufu (a starchy dish), and other foods (yams and cassava).
- Students will learn to count to ten in Twi.
- Students will learn the tradition of naming children.
