Lesson 1: Overview ( Geography and Culture)

Jamaica’s Geography

  • Students will identify the continent of North America on the World Map.
  • Students will identify the country of Jamaica, and the Caribbean, its size, and geographic location within North America using maps.
  • Students will note the capital of Jamaica and how to identify any country’s capital.

Jamaica’s Flag

  • Students will learn about Jamaica’s flag.
  • Students will learn what the colors and symbols on the flag represent.
  • Students will create “straw flags” and color the flag coloring sheets.

Jamaica’s Culture

  • Students will learn about aspects of Jamaica’s culture using pictures.
  • Students will learn about Jamaican food, language, landforms, animals, agriculture, sports and popular figures.
  • Students will learn about Jamaica’s most popular landform, several agricultural items specific to Jamaica, and the national dish.

Lesson 2: Overview (Historical Figures)

History of Jamaica

  • Students will learn about the indigenous people of Jamaica.
  • Students will learn about the invaders who colonized Jamaica.
  • Students will learn the date of Jamaica’s independence.

Garvey, Nanny of the Maroons and Marley

  • Students will learn about Marcus Garvey.
  • Students will learn about Nanny of the Maroons.
  • Students will learn about Bob Marley

Jamaica’s National Heroes Park

  • Students will learn the original site plans of National Heroes Park.
  • Students will learn about the layout and memorials within the park.
  • Students will learn how the park was dedicated to national heroes in 1973.

Lesson 3: Overview (Music, Fashion, Language and Sports)

Music of Jamaica

  • Students will learn the definition of genre in regards to music.
  • Students will learn about various genres of music from Jamaica.
  • Distinctions will be made among reggae, dancehall, calypso, roots, and soca music.

Fashions of Jamaica

  • Students will learn and see images of Jamaican fashions.
  • Students will learn the common color schemes of popular Jamaican fashions.
  • Students will see and learn the traditional fashion styles of Jamaica.

Language of Jamaica

  • Students will learn the name of the language widely spoken in Jamaica.
  • Students will learn and practice the numbers from 1 to 10 in Patois.
  • Students will learn and practice common phrases in Patois.

Sports of Jamaica

  • Students will learn about the most popular sports in Jamaica.
  • Students will learn how cricket differs from baseball.
  • Students will learn about the historic Jamaican Bobsled Team.
