Lesson 1: Overview (Geography and Culture)

Students will explore the map of Jamaica and its surrounding geography.

  • Students will locate the 7 continents on the map.
  • Students will locate Jamaica and the Caribbean Sea on the map.
  • Students will locate Jamaica’s capital on the map.

Students will explore the Jamaican Flag

  • Students will learn about the Jamaican flag.
  • Students will learn what the colors of the flag represent.
  • Students will complete flag coloring sheets.
  • Students will learn about Jamaica’s national crest.

Students will explore the culture of Jamaica and the prominent leaders of Jamaica.

  • Students will learn about Jamaican culture using pictures.
  • Students will learn about the food, language, and agriculture of Jamaica.
  • Students will learn and explore the people of Jamaica including Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley.

Lesson 2: Overview (Geography and Animals)

Students will explore National Parks in Jamaica.

  • Students will be able to identify two National Parks in Jamaica.
  • Students will learn about the National Heroes Park and Samuel’s Bay National MarinePark.
  • Students will learn about Michael Manley and Jamaica’s independence.

Students will explore famous landmarks and landforms.

  • Students will explore the Rio Minho River.
  • Students will explore Dunn’s River Falls and Park.
  • Students will explore the Mystic Mountain Rainforest Park.

Students will learn facts about native animals and Jamaica’s national symbols.

  • Students will identify native animals and their features in Jamaica.
  • Students will identify Jamaica’s national flower, fruit, and animal.

Lesson 3: Overview (Language and Festivals)

Students will learn about the language in Jamaica.

  • Students will learn that the national language is English.
  • Students will learn that the preferred home language is Patois.
  • Students will learn the origins of the Patois dialect.

Students will learn to count and speak common phrases in Patois.

  • Students will learn to count 1-10 in Patois.
  • Students will practice speaking in Patois.
  • Students will learn common phrases in Patois.

Students will learn about the people and popular festivals in Jamaica.

  • Students will learn about the history of Reggae music and its founder along with popular festivals.
  • Students will review a recipe and learn how to make Jamaican Fried dumplings also known as Johnny Cakes.
  • Students will learn about the different types of festivals in Jamaica.
