Meals
2023 Meals:
KCC is applying for the Free Summer Meals program through DC Parks and Rec for our cultural summer camps. If accepted, every camper, including those attending our culture camp, can receive free meals regardless of income level. Be sure to check off the boxes when you register for our cultural summer camp if you want to enroll in the meals program. Campers enrolled before camp may receive free breakfast as well. Our culture camp provides a safe and inclusive environment for campers from all backgrounds, and we want to make sure every child is well-fed and energized for a day full of cultural exploration. Parents are welcome to bring their children to breakfast even if they are not enrolled before camp, but you are required to stay with your child and provide supervision until regular camp starts. KCC will provide supervision and activities for campers enrolled in the before-camp program. Our summer camp culture program, including the meals program, is designed to provide a well-rounded and enriching experience for every child.
Please note that the free meals program may not be a good option for children with food allergies.
In the event that KCC is not able to participate in the Free Summer Meals program, we will notify parents, and campers will need to bring their lunch daily that does not require refrigeration. ALL campers, whether enrolled in the meals program or not, will need to bring a snack and a filled water bottle to our culture camp. If your camper is enrolled in after-camp, please pack two snacks. We are a nut-free facility, so if you pack something that looks like nut butter, please label it clearly. Your child’s safety and well-being are our top priorities at our culture camp.

CAMP T-SHIRT. Each child will receive ONE t-shirt on their first day of camp. Campers registered for multiple sessions will not receive additional t-shirts. Additional shirts can be purchased for $12 plus tax.
DRESS CODE. The safety of our campers is our top priority. To increase the visibility and safety of our campers, we require all campers to wear their camp T-shirts daily. Camp shirts from previous summers may also be worn. Additional T-shirts may be purchased for $12.00 plus tax
Tennis shoes or closed-toe sports sandals are highly recommended since a great deal of time will be spent outside if the weather permits. For safety reasons, flip-flop shoes are only permitted during Water Play Wednesdays.
We also encourage our campers to dress modestly, even during Water Play. Campers should wear shorts (knee length or just above) and T-shirts or board shorts and rash guards. No bathing suits please. Please refer to the Camp Checklist for additional information or speak to the camp director if you have any questions.
REFUND POLICY. A non-refundable 10% deposit is due upon registration to hold your child’s space. Registration processing fees charged by ACTIVE are also non-refundable. In order to receive the Early Bird Special, registration must be paid in FULL for all weeks by Nov. 15 (Winter Camp), Jan. 15 (Spring Camp), and April 15 (Summer Camp). Anyone registering after the early bird deadlines will have until Dec.1 (Winter Camp), March 1 (Spring Camp), and June 1 (Summer) to remit the full camp payment. Payments for registrations received after May 1 for the summer are due at least two weeks before week 1 of camp. Payment plans are available.
A refund will be honored, less the non-refundable 10% deposit and registration processing fees, if notification is received by the camp registration office in writing, via email, or regular mail by Dec. 1 (Winter Camp), March 1 (Spring Camp) and May 15 (Summer Camp). No refunds will be honored thereafter (one exception regarding Minimum Campers Needed).
If your camper contracts COVID during Camp, no refunds will be issued since funds will have already been spent or committed. If COVID rises to the level that necessitates camp closure before camp starts due to the high transmission level in DC which poses serious health and safety concerns, camp registration fees will be held as a credit and may be applied to future camps (no refunds will be issued). If COVID rises to the level that necessitates camp closure after camp starts due to a high community transmission level in DC or if the transmission level at the campsite is high, and poses serious health and safety concerns, camp registration fees will be held as a credit and may be applied to future camps (no refunds will be issued). The current COVID community level in Washington, DC can be viewed here.
If your camper presents any symptoms of COVID before the start of Camp, is in close contact with anyone testing positive for COVID-19, or has tested positive themselves, please call the camp office at 202.643.8787. We will provide a credit that can be used for future in-person or online programs/camps.
A $20 administrative fee will be added for each change that is requested after April 15 for summer Early Bird registrants and May 1 for all other summer registrants.
No substitution of siblings will be honored. Make-up days are not an option. No refunds will be issued in the event of camp closure due to inclement weather, emergencies, loss of power, health or safety concerns, COVID high transmission levels, or circumstances beyond the control of the camp.
SNACKS & LUNCHES. For summer 2023, KCC is applying for the Free Summer Meals program through DC Parks and Rec. If accepted, every camper can receive free meals regardless of income level. Be sure to check off the boxes when you register if you want to enroll in the meals program. Campers enrolled in before camp can receive free breakfast. Parents are welcome to bring their children to breakfast even if they are not enrolled in before camp, but you are required to stay with your child and provide supervision until regular camp starts. KCC will provide supervision and activities for campers enrolled in the before camp program.
The free meals program is not a good option for children with food allergies. In the event that KCC is not able to participate in the Free Summer Meals program, we will notify parents and campers will need to bring their lunch daily that does not require refrigeration. ALL campers, whether enrolled in the meals programs or not, will need to bring a snack and a filled water bottle. If your camper is enrolled in after camp, please pack two snacks. We are a nut-free facility. If you pack something that looks like nut butter, please label it clearly.
COVID POLICY. KCC follows the latest guidelines from the CDC, local agencies, and our host school. Please read our host school’s policies.
Campers, staff, and counselors-in-training may be required to submit the results of their antigen COVID test by 3:30 PM every Monday before the start of each camp week. We will update parents as we receive guidance from our host school.
HEALTHY FOOD. We encourage parents to pack healthy snacks and lunches. Minimizing or avoiding foods that contain harmful chemicals, preservatives, refined sugars, refined flours, and hydrogenated fats is highly suggested. Kids and Culture staffers have been instructed not to give children candy or gum at any time. For pre-planned special events, such as Festival Fridays, campers may have the option of eating a popsicle or other dessert that adheres to the standards set forth above.
INCLEMENT WEATHER. Kids and Culture Camp will not close due inclement weather, unless the administrators overseeing the camp site determine that attendance will present a safety hazard or there is loss of power. In the event that camp is closed due to loss of power or safety concerns, parents will receive an email from the Director. Parents will also receive notification via email if other emergencies arise that may change the normal camp schedule.
